Bari is the capital of the Apuria region, situated on Italy’s ‘heel’. Well known for its functioning port and acclaimed university, Bari offers sparkling blue seas against an historic backdrop. Featuring two sea harbours, the Old Port as well as the New Port, this is a particularly charming town well worth a visit. Particularly inviting is Barivecchia, the beautiful medieval old town that has retained its original plan and is home to many of the town’s historic buildings, monuments and attractions.
Art lovers should visit the Pinacoteca Provinciale di Bari, home to the most important painting collection in the region, including collections from the 15th century to the present day. In the Carrassi district, you can visit the early 20th century Russian church, built to welcome Russian pilgrims visiting St Nicholas’ tomb. If you like to be outdoors, roaming the streets of Bari is an enjoyable way to spend your day, but the Orto Botanico dell'Università di Bari botanical garden is also well worth a visit.
An excellent contrast to Bari is to head cross country to the city of Napoli and the infamous Amalfi coast where you can enjoy a meandering coastline overlooking azure seas, rocky outcrops, steep cliffs and a warm welcome. Although this is a perfectly doable day trip, an overnight stay is highly recommended so that you can soak in all the sights and sounds of Napoli – by day and night – as well as visit the towns dotting the Amalfi coastline. It’s a much nicer way to explore than just zipping through – but if you’re pushed for time, don’t be tempted to skip this route.
Pick up your hire car at Bari airport and then head out on the A14 towards Canosa di Puglia. Soon after you hit this town, you'll spot the exit on to the A16 towards Naples (Napoli). Continue straight on towards the city and you’ll reach Naples in about an hour and a half. Once you’ve enjoyed the city’s delights, cross to the Amalfi coast where you can take in the unbelievably breath-taking views of this world-famous coastal drive, considered one of the best in Italy..
