Exeter

An important city in terms of art, culture and history, Exeter is the perfect destination for anyone wanting a holiday that combines ancient monuments, gorgeous architecture, beautiful scenery and cutting edge art. Also the gateway to Devon and perfect for exploring the surrounding West Country counties, Exeter offers every visitor an exciting trip, full of surprises.

Must-see attractions: In Exeter city, visit the Cathedral - the Church of Saint Peter, boasting the longest uninterrupted medieval vaultis in the world – to marvel at stunning gothic architecture and follow in the footsteps of thousands of pilgrims. If you’re lucky, you might catch the Exeter Philharmonic Orchestra rehearsing for a concert. Stop by iconic landmarks such as The Clock Tower, the Iron Bridge and the beautiful Cathedral Close and walk the ancient Roman Wall. Explore beneath the city streets with a guided tour of the medieval Underground Passages – originally fresh water channels for the whole city and now one of Exter’s top tourist attractions.

With its colourful past, Exeter has plenty of historic places of interest to visit such as the Tudor monastery ruins of St Nicholas Priory in Mint Lane, the medieval Guildhall, the ruins of Rougemont Norman Castle and the Custom House in the Quays. You can also visit England’s third oldest synagogue, which dates back to 1763. The city’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum hosts excellent permanent collections that won the title of Museum of the Year in 2012. The Spacex is home to modern art collections, and the Media Centre and Phoenix house displays from important local and international artists.

Take a five and a half mile walk or cycle ride along the River Exe Estuary, starting at Exeter Quay and finishing at Turf Lock, to stretch the legs and get away from it all. The Quay area is perfect for rest and relaxation for all the family, with a multitude of eateries, visitor centres and activities that will entrance and enchant even the most inquisitive of minds. You can also visit Northernhay Victorian Gardens for some inner-city greenery. For theatre, try the Northcott Theatre with its annual open-air Shakespeare performances located within the university grounds, or the Barnfield Theatre.

Recommended scenic drives: Collect your hire car at Exeter airport and head to the outskirts of the city to one – or all – of the five valley parks. For a trip further afield, try Dorchester where you will be enchanted by Thomas Hardy country. Continue on to walk the gorgeous New Forest, 150 square miles of unspoilt beauty that spreads across the counties of Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire.

Head North to Somerset and visit the market town of Yeovil, famous for its farmers markets and West Country charm. Head south to Devon to see the rugged headlands and famous sandstone cliffs. For a traditional fishing village, try Padstow, a pastel-coloured medieval town where crab, lobster and fish are still hauled daily.  St Ives is also worth a visit – an historic mining, fishing and farming town, it is an interesting mix of blue flag beaches, coastal walks and arts.
